The Nigerian Navy (NN) and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) in collaboration with the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), Marine Police and other emergency agencies have carried out a joint marine search and rescue simulation exercise in the Lagos waters.
The exercise was held at the waterfront on 14 Oyinkan Abayomi Drive, Ikoyi, Lagos.
The aim is to assess the readiness of agencies to respond to emergencies within the Lagos maritime domain, necessary to enhance safety on Lagos waterways and boost passengers’ confidence in water transportation.
The simulation exercise, showcased the joint capabilities of diverse agencies such as LASAMBUS, LASEMA, Marine Police, and Lagos State Fire Service.
The Flag Officer, Commanding Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Mustapha Hassan, explained the broader goal of promoting water-friendly alternatives to reduce road traffic.
The Governor of Lagos state, Babajide Sanwo Olu, said the exercise is a testament to the commitment and preparedness of the Lagos State government to ensure that the inland waterways are safe.
The Governor, who was represented by the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, Sanwo-Olu explained the importance of joint efforts in search and rescue operations.
According to him, the collaboration was not just an option but a necessity in search and rescue as it will help reduce rescue time and boost passenger confidence in water transportation.
The climax of the event was marked by the Commander Nigerian Navy Ship Beecroft and Maritime Component Commander Operation AWATSE, Commodore Kolawole Olumide Oguntuga, who expressed satisfaction with the exercise’s success.
Plans for deployment at critical spots in the inland waters of Lagos were unveiled, aiming to enhance economic activities and reduce response time to accident spots.
In his vote of thanks, Commodore Oguntuga acknowledged the contributions of key personalities, including Mr. Oluwadamila Emmanuel, GM LASWA, and Mr. Ibrahim Famuyiwa, Head of Operations LASWA, in ensuring the event’s success.
The collaborative spirit exhibited during the simulation underscores the commitment to preparedness, response, and recovery in the face of maritime challenges.
The success of this joint initiative reflects the unwavering resolve of the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral EI Ogalla, to ensure the safety and security of the maritime domain for sustained economic prosperity.
