Lance Corporal Babangida Ibrahim has been sentenced to 55 years imprisonment for killing and robbing a staff of World Health Organisation (WHO), Mr. Bello Abdullahi Aliyu at Anka Local Government Area of Zamfara State, in 2014.
Delivering his judgment on Wednesday in Abuja, the President of the General Court Martial (GCM), Major General Priye Fakrogha, found the soldier guilty on the 4 counts charge of culpable homicide, house breaking, theft and burglary.
The Court sitting took place at the Command Officers Mess 1, Asokoro, Abuja while the judgment would be subject to Nigerian Army Council Authority approval.
In addition, Babangida, was also accused of stealing a mobile phone and N600,000 from various persons, on different occasions. While pronouncing his judgment after listening to the Prosecuting and Defence Counsel, the President of the GMC, said the accused soldier was found guilty for homicide and sentenced to 40 years, while he had 5 years sentences each for house breaking, theft and burglary. However, Counts 2, 3 & 4 sentences would run concurrently.
It was learnt that L/Cpl Babangida Ibrahim, was on Operation Mesa to fight banditry in Zamfara State when he committed the offence.
It was gathered that on the night he committed the offence, about 10pm on August 11, 2014, without justification, he shot and killed Mr Bello Aliyu Abdullahi with his personal AK 47 rifle.
He didn’t stop there, but went on and broke into the house of the victim, located at Gidan-Dari, Anka LGA, Zamfara State about 4am and stole his Gionee E3 and Nokia handsets.
Not done, Babangida also stole his Honda Accord car with registration number: TRK 414 AA, containing one Laptop computer and the sum of N600,000. He later moved to Kaduna where his family resides and was using the car as a personal car before he was arrested.
Members of the General Court Martial included Major General PB Fakrogha, President, Brigadier Generals JO Ochai, POE Pearse, EJ Ikomi, AL Okpodu, SD Makulo, Colonels MK Ibrahim, L Abubakar, MA Yusuf and Captain KC Ogili (Judge Advocate).
The Prosecuting Council for the Nigerian Army was led by Major Dipreye Biambo while the Defence Counsel for Lance Corporal Babangida was Barrister Felix Jimba.
