The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has clarified issues on the alleged arrest and detention of Daniel Tyokua, a reporter with Authority Newspaper, adding that Tyokua was not arrested or detained but was only invited to the command over a petition written by his Tiv Community against him concerning an alleged false publication he made on the emergence of Mr. Andrew Akuma as the new (Ter) leader of Tiv people in Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), which they claimed could cause a crisis in the community.
The Command Spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, in a statement, said “Contrary to the news making the rounds over the alleged arrest and detention of one Daniel Tyokua, a reporter for Authority Newspaper, earlier today, June 26, 2024, by FCT police operatives, the command wishes to state clearly that Mr. Daniel has not been arrested or detained as alleged but was only invited over a petition written by his community (Tiv) against him concerning an alleged false publication he made on the emergence of one Mr. Andrew Akuma as the new (Ter) leader of Tiv people in Abuja Municipal Area Council, which they claim could cause a crisis in the community.
“Also, the police operatives of the command didn’t request nor collect a dime from the reporter, as alleged. He was asked to go, as the other party wasn’t on the ground for the scheduled interview and interrogation by the police operatives.
“Consequent to the above, the Commissioner of Police FCT, CP Benneth C. Igweh, psc, mni, cautions against the peddling of false information that may damage the image of the police. He, therefore, calls for verification and evaluation of all received information, as misinformation could prove dangerous to the populace.”
