It was a huge harvest of criminals on Saturday as the Edo State Joint Security Taskforce raided Upper Sakponba area including the riverine communities in Benin City where several persons suspected to be kidnappers were arrested.
The suspects have been terrorizing Edo state and adjoining communities for several months hence the taskforce decided to smoke them out.
The all-male suspected kidnappers were seven in number. They were picked up around Ogbemudia oil Palm Plantation less than 24 hours the taskforce activated the operation.
It was learnt that the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 2 Division, Ibadan, Major General Omozoje, briefed the Governor Godwin Obaseki of their activity in the state, and promised to bring the rising spate of criminality in the state that have made residents unsettled to a halt.
He also pledges to support every effort that would help at capturing fleeing escapees from the two Federal Correctional Facilities at Sapele Road and Oko in Benin City respectively.
Before kick starting the operation, the GOC, Maj. Gen. Omozoje had met with heads of security agencies in the state, emphasizing on synergy among the agencies with a view to restoring peace and order in the state.
He said on the riverine communities operation and other flashpoints, “Troops of the 4 Brigade are on clearance operation at suspected kidnappers hideouts at Ogbemudia Oil Palm plantation and the river behind it.
“We intend to thwart all kidnapping activities along the axis and secure the Benin-Auchi Expressway with a view to restoring sanity and peaceful coexistence for unhindered commuting to take place.
Gen. Omozoje noted that at the moment, he is in constant touch with the Commander 4 Brigade, Brig. Gen. UM Bello, and the Assistant Inspector General (AIG), Zone 5, AIG Sola Davis.
