The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 6 Division, Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt, Maj. Gen. Olubunmi Johnson Irefin has died of complications from Covid-19 in Abuja.
Although the Nigerian Army is yet to make a categorical statement announcing his demise, but his death has led to the cancellation of the remaining activities for the ongoing Chief of Army Staff’s Annual Conference 2020 holding at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, Abuja.
The Director, Army Public Relations (DAPR) Brig. Gen. Sagir Musa in a statement on Thursday said “the Nigerian Army wishes to inform members of the public that due to resurgence of COVID-19 Pandemic in the Federal Capital Territory Abuja in what appears to be a second wave of infection cycle and the unfortunate incident on Tuesday 8 December 2020, where an officer participating in the ongoing Chief of Army Staff’s Annual Conference 2020 here in Abuja tested positive to COVID 19, the remaining activities of the conference have therefore been immediately cancelled.
“All the participants have been mandated to immediately proceed on self-isolation in line with the Federal Government’s protocol for COVID-19 and to prevent any further spread of the disease,” He stated.
However, it was learnt that Gen Irefin took ill during the conference on Wednesday and was rushed to the hospital for medical care but died this morning.
Meanwhile, it was not clear if he was the senior officer that tested positive leading to the disbandment of the ongoing COAS conference.
Gen Irefin was the immediate General Officer Commanding (GOC) 81 Division where he served between July 22, 2019 to July 22, 2020 before he was redeployed to 6 Division as GOC.
He was one of the participants in the ongoing Chief of Army Staff annual conference in Abuja before his sudden demise.
His army history revealed that the ebullient officer, Major General Johnson Olubunmi Irefin was born on January 15, 1965 in Kogi, North Central Nigeria.
He started his Cadet training at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant 24th September, 1984. He rose through the officers rank and became a one-star General on September 17, 2014 and got promoted Major General in 2018. May his gentle Soul Rest in Perfect Peace.
