The President of the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF), Dr. Ademola Are, has urged the Nigerian national men’s Rugby team, the Stallions, to give their best and aim for glory, as they gear up for their campaign at the Rugby Africa Men’s Sevens tournament in Mauritius this Saturday.
Dr. Are commended the Stallions for their steady rise over the past three years, noting their consistent participation in international competitions and improved performances that have elevated their ranking both on the African continent and globally.
Speaking to the NRFF media team ahead of the tournament, he described the competition as a valuable opportunity to assess the team’s development.
“This tournament offers us another chance to measure our progress and evaluate how far we’ve come in the last three years,” Dr. Are said.
“Despite the challenges we’ve faced in providing ideal preparation conditions, I’m impressed by the unwavering commitment of our players. Their passion and patriotism are second to none.”
Dr. Are expressed confidence in the team’s performance and shared the Federation’s broader vision for rugby development in Nigeria.
“Our ultimate goal is to reach the level of leading rugby nations like South Africa, Kenya, and Uganda,” he said.

“We’re laying the foundation for that through grassroots initiatives such as the ‘Rugby Rising’ schools program, which is now active across several states. Talks are ongoing with a potential sponsor for the National 7s Circuit and the 15s League, which we plan to stage before the year ends. We’re also seeking investment and support to grow women’s rugby in Nigeria, which holds vast potential.”
He added that while infrastructure and resources are still being developed, the commitment of Nigerian players remains a source of pride.
“When it comes to heart and dedication, our players already rival the best. That’s why I’m optimistic. I encourage them to leave everything on the field—play for the badge, the flag, and the millions of Nigerians who believe in them.”
Dr. Are also acknowledged the growing interest in rugby among Nigerians and praised the support shown by fans.
“The love for rugby is growing, and our people will stand by the Stallions regardless of the results. They understand the sacrifices these young men have made to be here and represent the country with honour.”
Nigeria’s campaign at the Rugby Africa Men’s Sevens kicks off on Saturday with a tough opening match against South Africa’s Blitzboks at 10:06 a.m., followed by games against Burkina Faso at 12:28 p.m. and Zambia at 3:12 p.m.
