
The Nigerian Army School of Supply and Transport (NASST) has intensified its campaign on fire safety awareness with a one-day Fire Sensitisation Seminar and Firefighting Demonstration at the Muhammadu Buhari Auditorium, Benin City.
Im a statement by the Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations Officer, Nigerian Army School of Supply and Transport, Lieutenant Samson Ayomide Akindutire said that the event which held on Monday, 22nd September 2025, was designed to strengthen both the theoretical and practical understanding of fire and safety management, brought together officers, families, and stakeholders within the barracks community.
In his remarks, the Commandant of NASST, Major General Adebayo Olatunde Adegbite, emphasized that fire prevention begins with strict adherence to safety standards. He warned against illegal electrical connections, overloading of circuits, and the use of appliances not aligned with building specifications, describing such practices as potential triggers of devastating fire outbreaks.
He urged participants to incorporate safety planning in their homes and workplaces to avert what he termed “the cobra effect” of negligence.

The seminar featured lectures delivered by resource persons from the Federal Fire Service, Edo State Command. Deputy Superintendent of Fire, Abu Jibril Jimoh, speaking on “Fire Prevention in Contemporary Society”, noted that over 60 per cent of fire incidents are domestic or workplace related, often caused by gas leaks, faulty wiring, and careless handling of appliances.
Similarly, Assistant Superintendent of Fire II, Basil Akenzua, who spoke on “Safety Measures in Homes and Offices”, outlined critical preventive steps including preparedness, regular training of staff and family members on the use of fire extinguishers, prompt alarm-raising in case of fire, and immediate contact with emergency hotlines or fire services.

The Deputy Commandant/ Director of Studies, Brigadier General Kingsley Inyang, alongside other senior officers and invited guests, underscored the importance of equipping homes and offices with functional fire extinguishers as a first line of defence against outbreaks.
The practical session featured live firefighting demonstrations and drills conducted by students of the Fire and Safety Management Course, simulating different fire scenarios and response techniques.
The event was attended by representatives of the Federal Fire Service, Edo State Fire Service, students of Third Quarter Courses, Members of the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA), and the Nigerian Army Soldiers’ Wives Association (NASWA), among others.
