…HOLDS MAIDEN 2025 TRAINING DAY

To ensure sanctity, discipline, and regimentation in the Nigerian Army, the Commander, 9 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Lt Gen Taoreed Lagbaja Cantonment, Brig Gen Olawale Matthew Oyekola has called on soldiers to be circumspect and observe strictest discipline in the use of social media.

Disclosing this during the maiden edition of a Training Day for the Year 2025, titled: “Policy on the Use of Social Media for the Nigerian Army,” he explained that the policy on the Use of Social Media was not designed to gag personnel but ensures maximum operational security of impending tasks without compromising troops’ safety in operations.

The training which held at the Calf Officers Mess on Wednesday, 24th September, 2025, had participants of all ranks drawn from units under 9 Brigade, Institute of Army Education, Nigerian Army School of Islamic Affairs, NA Archives, Directorate of Command Secondary Schools and other units domiciled within the Cantonment.

Brigadier General Olawale Matthew Oyekola, further remarked by commending a soldier who requested his interview, which was ably granted to avert use of social media handles for malicious messaging.

He admonished participants to channel their complaints to appropriate quotas rather than engaging in actions that would earn them unwarranted sanctions under the notion of being frustrated.

Earlier in his welcome remarks, the Chief of Staff (COS), Headquarters 9 Brigade, Colonel Ibrahim Bunu Sheriff, expressed satisfaction with the training, especially with the choice of the topic for the Training Day.

He observed that recent invitation of some soldiers by higher authority over social media posts, makes the training apt and timely.

He urged the participants to open their minds and learn from these policies and educate other soldiers on the use of social media when they return to their various units in order to avoid further disciplinary action.

In his keynote lecture, the resource person, Major HA Yussuph, highlighted the history of social media, guidelines on the use of social media for Armed Forces of Nigeria personnel, security measures, and social media offences among others.

In addition, a brief lecture was given by Group Managing Director, Corporate Security TGI Group, Brigadier General Anthony Onibasa (Retired) on the topic: ” From Khaki to Kaftan: Transitioning from Military to Civil Life”.

The retired senior officer reiterated that what kills military personnel after active service is not the lack of what to eat but redundancy. He gave guides on areas that participants could develop themselves and remain highly sought-after for employment after service.

He called on them to re-engage in known routine that would keep them busy and active.

According to Major Cornelius Gutus, Acting Assistant Director,
Army Public Relations, 9 Brigade Nigerian Army, in a statement today, Thursday, 25th September, 2025, said the Training Day climaxed by the presentation of souvenirs to resource persons.
