As the world becomes increasingly interconnected through technology, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has urged Nigerians to take personal responsibility for protecting themselves and others from cyber threats.
The call comes as part of activities marking this year’s Cybersecurity Awareness Month, themed “Cyber Hygiene for a Safer Tomorrow.”
In a statement issued by Mrs. Hadiza Umar, Director of Corporate Communications and Media Relations at NITDA, the agency emphasized that cyber safety begins with individual responsibility and that every Nigerian has a role to play in securing the nation’s digital space.
“As our lives become more connected through phones, computers, and the internet, so do the risks from hackers, scams, and online fraud. Practicing good cyber hygiene helps protect not only individuals but also families, workplaces, and the wider community,” the statement read.
NITDA highlighted several simple but effective steps that individuals can take to improve their online security, including:
- Using strong and unique passwords for all online accounts.
- Enabling two-factor authentication.
- Keeping devices and applications regularly updated.
- Backing up important data frequently.
- Avoiding suspicious links and attachments from unknown sources.
- Thinking carefully before sharing personal or financial information online.
According to NITDA, the “Cyber Hygiene for a Safer Tomorrow” campaign reinforces that digital safety is a shared responsibility. By making small, consistent efforts, Nigerians can collectively help build a safer and more resilient digital environment.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to promoting digital literacy, responsible online behaviour, and national cybersecurity resilience as key pillars for achieving a secure digital Nigeria.
“As we continue to build a digitally resilient nation, NITDA calls on all citizens to stay alert, click wisely, and stay safe online,” the statement concluded.
