
NNS Beecroft, Nigerian Navy, Apapa, Lagos, has intercepted a van with foreign plates near Ijegun that was carrying 840kgs of cannabis sativa.
The drugs, which were laden with 20 bags, were arrested on the 2nd October 2025, by the Quick Response Team and security personnel from Operation MESA, after receiving credible information leading to the interception.
Briefing the press about the arrest, Captain Idongesit Udoesien, who stood in for the Commander, NNS Beecroft, Commodore Paul Ponfa Nimmyel explained that the van was found with 20 bags of suspected cannabis inside, weighing about 840kg.
He disclosed that the driver and motor boy of the van ran away when they saw naval team. He noted that the goal of the force is to stop the spread of illegal drugs and improve security in Lagos state and its coastal areas.

As customary, the seized drugs and the van were handed over to the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency for further investigation.
Captain Idongesit Udoesien further explained that the operation was part of the Nigerian Navy’s ongoing efforts, led by Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, to stop illegal activities like drug trafficking in Nigeria’s coastal waters.
“We are working with other agencies to protect lives and property in the maritime areas. The Nigerian Navy Ship BEECROFT would continue to patrol the waters around Lagos to prevent criminals from operating there.
“We appreciate the hard work of our team and ask the public to help us by providing information to improve security in Lagos state.
