The Anambra State Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting human rights through stronger collaboration with the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Awka Branch, and its Human Rights Committee.

This follows a courtesy visit to the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, by members of the NBA and the Human Rights Committee at the Command Headquarters, Awka, on Tuesday, October 14, 2025.

According to SP Tochukwu Ikenga, Police Public Relations Officer, Anambra State Police Command, Awka, the visit was part of ongoing efforts to strengthen cooperation between the Police and the legal community in promoting justice, ensuring accountability, and deepening public trust in the criminal justice system.

Welcoming the delegation, CP Orutugu commended the NBA leadership for its continuous advocacy and constructive engagement with law enforcement agencies. He described the relationship between the Police and the Bar as a strategic alliance vital to justice delivery and the protection of citizens’ rights.

“The Police and the Bar share a common responsibility in ensuring justice and fairness. Our Command remains committed to professionalism, accountability, and respect for human rights in all operations,” the Police Commissioner said.

He also acknowledged the importance of oversight functions such as cell visits and pro bono legal services, noting that these measures enhance transparency and safeguard due process in the handling of suspects.

Speaking earlier, the Chairman of the NBA Awka Branch and the Chairperson of the Human Rights Committee lauded the Police Command under CP Orutugu’s leadership for maintaining an open-door policy and improving Police–citizen relations across the state.

They reiterated the Association’s readiness to collaborate with the Police in areas of training, sensitization, and mediation on human rights issues to further strengthen the justice system in Anambra State.
