President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has charged Nigerian editors to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and truth in their work, emphasizing that verification, balance, and fairness must remain the foundation of journalism in the country.
Speaking at the opening of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) Annual Conference held at the State House, Abuja, President Tinubu said the media remains a vital pillar in shaping public discourse, strengthening democratic governance, and promoting national cohesion.
“The theme you have chosen, ‘Democratic Governance and National Cohesion: The Role of Editors’, invites us to reflect on the state of our democracy and the ways in which public discourse can either strengthen or weaken the bonds that hold our nation together,” the President noted.
Tinubu commended the Nigerian media for its historic role in national development, recalling the sacrifices made by journalists who, in the face of colonial oppression and military dictatorship, upheld the values of justice and freedom.
“Many journalists endured intimidation, detention, and hardship in defence of the public good. Their sacrifices are part of the foundation upon which our democracy rests today,” he said, urging the media to continue honouring their legacy through responsible and truthful reportage.
The President cautioned against the dangers of misinformation in the digital age, noting that social media has made every citizen a potential publisher.
“In such an environment, the editorial function is more important than ever. Verification must be your anchor; balance must be your principle, and professional judgement must be your guide,” he stated.
While acknowledging the media’s right to critique government actions, Tinubu advised that criticism should be informed, fair, and constructive. “Your aim must never be to tear down, but to help build a better society,” he said.
On the state of the nation’s economy, the President reiterated his administration’s commitment to security, economic stability, and inclusive growth. He said the ongoing reforms were aimed at restoring macroeconomic balance, encouraging investment, and rebuilding confidence in the system.
“The reforms we have undertaken have been challenging, but they are designed to place our economy on a strong and enduring footing. We remain focused on ensuring that growth translates into real improvements in the daily lives of Nigerians,” he added.
President Tinubu emphasized that nation-building requires collective effort across all sectors, including the media.
“Economic reforms and institutional improvements alone cannot build the Nigeria we seek. It requires cooperation, trust, and a shared understanding that our future is tied together,” he said.
He urged editors to promote unity and responsibility in their reportage, reminding them of their influence in shaping the national narrative.
“The tone you set in your newsrooms, the standards you enforce, and the courage with which you defend the truth will help shape the direction of our national journey,” the President declared.
The President commended the Nigerian Guild of Editors for sustaining its annual tradition of reflection and professional engagement, and wished participants fruitful deliberations.
