ENUGU CP CALLS ON UNIVERSITIES 3

The Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, psc, has urged Nigerian universities to take a frontline role in developing scientific and technology-driven solutions that can strengthen security operations across the country.

The police chief made the call on Saturday, November 15, 2025, while presenting a paper at a security summit hosted by the University of Nigeria Consultancy Services Limited and held at the Princess Alexandra Auditorium, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). He was represented by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Command, SP Daniel Ndukwe.

In a presentation titled “Scientific and Innovative Approaches to Effective Security Operations in Small Areas: A Focus on the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN)”, CP Giwa stressed that universities must leverage research, technology, and innovation to help address emerging security threats, particularly in defined spaces such as campuses and other small communities.

According to him, purely reactive policing methods have become inadequate in the face of evolving security challenges. “There is a need for a comprehensive, intelligence-driven and community-engaged security model,” he emphasized, adding that universities are strategically positioned to advance technological knowledge and security innovations capable of supporting Nigeria’s law-enforcement architecture.

The summit brought together key figures in academia and security management. Among them were the Vice-Chancellor of UNN, Professor Simon Uchenna Ortuanya; the chairmen of Nsukka and Udenu Local Government Areas, Engr. Jude Chinedu Asogwa and Aka Eze Aka; Director of UNN Consultancy Services, Prof. Emmanuel Nwosu, retired security chiefs; members of the university’s security department, the Students’ Union Government leadership, and hundreds of students.

Participants described the discussions as timely, noting that the insights offered a clear roadmap for enhancing campus safety through science, technology, and innovation.

SP Daniel Ndukwe signed the statement on behalf of the Enugu State Police Command.
