President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed several state governors, including Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, and Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, to join Nigeria’s high-level delegation to the 2025 G20 Leaders’ Summit scheduled for 22–23 November in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The 2025 edition is historic as it marks the first time the G20 Presidency is held on African soil and the first time the Leaders’ Summit will be hosted on the continent. Members of the G20 include heads of government from major global economies, as well as the European Union and the African Union.
Hosted under the theme “Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability,” the summit will bring together world leaders, ministers, global development institutions, and multilateral partners to address critical global challenges spanning economic reforms, climate governance, and inclusive growth.
According to the Director of Press and Public Affairs to the Governor of Plateau State, Gyang Bere, Governor Mutfwang’s selection underscores his growing national prominence and Plateau State’s increasing relevance to Nigeria’s development agenda. His role at the Summit will place him at the centre of high-level multilateral discussions shaping global economic policy, climate action, and long-term development strategies.
Under President Tinubu’s directive, Governor Mutfwang and other invited governors are expected to participate in priority sessions covering:
- Global economic reforms and development financing, including advocacy for a more equitable international financial system and increased support for developing nations.
- Sustainable and value-driven mining, leveraging Plateau State’s legacy as the birthplace of formal mining in Nigeria to promote responsible extraction, value addition, and global investment.
- Climate governance and energy transition, pushing for climate finance, resilience, and fair transition pathways for developing countries.
- Global trade, job creation, and inclusive prosperity, focusing on expanding market access, strengthening SME development, and boosting youth employment.
- Digital transformation and infrastructure development, exploring partnerships for digital inclusion and financing large-scale infrastructure in energy, transport, water, and technology.
- Food security and agricultural resilience, enhancing cooperation to address global food shortages and strengthen sustainable agricultural systems.
Officials say Governor Mutfwang’s participation will support efforts to position Plateau State as a competitive destination for investment in mining, agriculture, renewable energy, tourism, and the digital economy. The Summit is expected to open new avenues for international cooperation and long-term capital inflow to the state.
Other governors in the delegation include Abdullahi Sule (Nasarawa), Umaru Bago (Niger), Dr. Peter Mbah (Enugu), Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), Inuwa Yahaya (Gombe), and Dikko Radda (Katsina). Their inclusion reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to enhancing subnational engagement in global economic diplomacy and ensuring that international agreements deliver tangible benefits at the state level.
With Governor Mutfwang joining Nigeria’s delegation in Johannesburg, Plateau State is poised to harness new opportunities emerging from one of the world’s most influential economic forums.
