The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) have sustained intensive military operations across the country, neutralising terrorists, rescuing kidnapped victims, and disrupting criminal networks in multiple theatres between December 12 and 22, 2025.
According to a weekly press briefing issued by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, the operations were conducted under various joint task forces as part of ongoing efforts to enhance national security, protect lives and property, and maintain peace during the festive period.
In the North East, troops under Joint Task Force Operation Hadin Kai recorded significant successes against Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists. Soldiers repelled an ISWAP attack on a Forward Operating Base in Mairari, neutralising two vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices (VBIEDs) before they could breach the base. Several terrorists were killed, while arms, ammunition, communication devices, motorcycles and medical supplies were recovered. Troops also intercepted a Lagos-registered vehicle conveying logistics for terrorists along the Maiduguri–Bama Road, arresting two suspects and dismantling support networks. Three kidnapped victims were rescued, while seven collaborators and informants were apprehended.
In the North West, troops of Operation Fansan Yamma conducted offensive operations across Zamfara, Kaduna, Sokoto, Kebbi, Katsina and Niger States, leading to the neutralisation of several terrorists, arrest of eight suspects and rescue of four kidnapped victims. Weapons, vehicles, livestock and household items were recovered. In a related development, troops intercepted two passengers in Kaduna State carrying ₦9 million intended as ransom for abducted children, with investigations ongoing to arrest the kidnappers.
Operations in the North Central zone under Operations Enduring Peace and Whirl Stroke also yielded results. Troops neutralised criminals, arrested suspects and rescued dozens of kidnapped victims across Plateau, Kaduna, Benue, Nasarawa, Taraba, Kogi and Kwara States. Notably, 43 abductees were rescued during operations targeting kidnappers’ hideouts in Benue and Nasarawa States. Additionally, two impostors impersonating the Chief of Army Staff were arrested in Edo State.
In the South-South region, troops of Operation Delta Safe foiled oil theft valued at over ₦15.6 million, recovering stolen crude oil and refined products, destroying illegal refining sites and arresting oil thieves. Further operations in Bayelsa, Rivers and Delta States led to the arrest of suspected gunrunners and the recovery of arms and ammunition.
Meanwhile, in the South East, troops of Operation Udo Ka arrested suspected criminals linked to IPOB/ESN activities in parts of Anambra State during intelligence-led operations.
The Defence Headquarters reaffirmed the military’s commitment to professionalism, respect for human rights and inter-agency collaboration, urging Nigerians to support ongoing security initiatives. The Chief of Defence Staff also commended troops for their bravery, particularly in the successful rescue of the remaining students of St. Mary School, Papiri, Niger State.
The military leadership paid tribute to retired veterans whose sacrifices and leadership laid the foundation for the modern Armed Forces of Nigeria, pledging to uphold their legacy in safeguarding the nation’s unity and stability.
