The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General OO Oluyede, has called for sustained national unity and a whole-of-society approach to tackling Nigeria’s security challenges, as the Armed Forces of Nigeria marked the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day (AFCRD) Regimental Dinner Night.
Speaking at the event held on January 14, 2026, the CDS described the regimental dinner as one of the military’s most cherished traditions, blending solemn remembrance with fellowship, discipline and pride in the profession of arms.
General Oluyede paid glowing tribute to fallen heroes and serving personnel, noting that Nigeria’s freedom and stability have been built on the sacrifices of brave men and women of the Armed Forces. He stressed that their courage, commitment and selfless service remain the bedrock of national security, especially as troops continue to confront daunting security challenges across the country.
Despite these challenges, the CDS said Nigerian troops have continued to record successes and win the confidence of citizens through their professionalism and dedication, helping to bridge the trust gap between the military and the civil populace. He also acknowledged the crucial role played by the families of military personnel, describing their quiet sacrifices and unwavering support as vital to operational effectiveness.
General Oluyede emphasised that the Armed Forces cannot secure the nation alone, underscoring the importance of collaboration with local communities and sister security agencies. According to him, a collective and coordinated effort remains essential in combating terrorism and other forms of criminality threatening Nigeria’s peace and democracy.
He expressed appreciation to President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his leadership, strategic guidance and continued support to the military. The CDS noted that the President’s commitment to enhancing troop welfare and modernising the Armed Forces has significantly strengthened their capacity to fulfil constitutional responsibilities.
The CDS also commended the Special Guest of Honour, the Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd), as well as other guests, for their presence at the event.
As the regimental dinner commenced, General Oluyede urged officers and men to reflect on the solemnity of remembrance while strengthening the spirit of comradeship that binds the Armed Forces together. He called on personnel to remain guided by tradition, professionalism and selfless devotion in the service of the nation.
The 2026 AFCRD Regimental Dinner Night formed part of activities to honour fallen heroes and celebrate the dedication and excellence of serving members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
