The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration aimed at improving transparency, accountability, and performance in Nigeria’s extractive industries.

This resolution was reached on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, when the Executive Secretary of NEITI, Honourable Musa Sarkin Adar, led a high-level management delegation on a courtesy visit to the Executive Chairman of the EFCC, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, at the Commission’s corporate headquarters in Jabi, Abuja.

Welcoming the delegation, Olukoyede described the extractive industry as the backbone of Nigeria’s economy and encouraged Adar to view his appointment as an opportunity to further entrench transparency and accountability in a sector that continues to sustain the nation’s economic growth.

He recalled the long-standing partnership between both institutions, noting that collaboration had been further strengthened since his assumption of office as EFCC Chairman.

“NEITI’s reports are like raw materials for us. Over the years, they have helped the Commission in investigations and recoveries. I can assure you that under your leadership, we will deepen this collaboration even further and take it to another level,” Olukoyede said.

According to a statement by the Head, Media and Publicity of EFCC, Dele Oyewale, the EFCC Chairman also disclosed that the enhanced partnership may lead to a review and strengthening of the existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between both agencies to make it more effective.

“We already have an MoU with NEITI. We are going to review it and see what needs improvement. While your Act may not have given you all the enforcement powers required, the EFCC will continue to support NEITI in ensuring compliance and accountability within the sector,” he added.

In his remarks, Adar stated that the visit was part of his strategic engagement with key stakeholders following his appointment in November 2025. He emphasized that collaboration with institutions such as the EFCC is critical to NEITI’s mandate of promoting transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s extractive sector.

“I have prioritized engagement with institutions whose statutory mandates align closely with NEITI’s responsibilities. I have been extensively briefed on the strong partnership between our agencies and the commendable work already being done,” he said.

Adar further noted that the meeting provided an opportunity to reaffirm the existing institutional relationship under the MoU and to renew a shared commitment to addressing systemic weaknesses that hinder effective governance of the extractive sector, particularly as Nigeria prepares to host the global Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) body.

The meeting underscored the shared determination of both agencies to work closely in safeguarding national resources and strengthening public confidence in the governance of Nigeria’s extractive industries.
