CGC ADENIYI CHALLENGES YOUNG CUSTOMS OFFICERS TO EXCEL IN POST-CLEARANCE AUDIT

The Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Adewale Adeniyi, has urged younger officers of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to aspire toward global expertise in Post Clearance Audit (PCA), describing it as a cornerstone for modern customs careers and the future of Nigerian trade facilitation.

Speaking at the conclusion of the five-day World Customs Organization (WCO) Accelerate Trade Facilitation Programme, held from January 19 to 23, 2026, at NCS Headquarters in Abuja, Adeniyi emphasised that mastering PCA techniques is the most effective way for new recruits to align their professional growth with international best practices.

“For the younger officers here, this might be your first exposure to this level of training. WCO experts also started from somewhere. Post Clearance Audit is an emerging tool developed by WCO, and this is the best way to begin your career,” he advised.

“Let your aspiration be shaped toward the dream that one day you can also become a PCA expert.”

Adeniyi described the programme as insightful and transformative, noting that practical sessions exposed officers to advanced audit tools and techniques that enhance analytical capacity, operational efficiency, and risk-based compliance monitoring. He stressed that the knowledge gained would directly support trade facilitation while safeguarding revenue and the national economy.

He reaffirmed NCS’s commitment to continuous reform, collaboration with international partners, and the deployment of modern tools to align Nigeria’s customs administration with global standards.

WCO Trade Facilitation Expert James Clark commended the NCS for embracing reform and modern customs practices, highlighting the importance of institutional commitment, capacity building, and consistent application of PCA tools in achieving long-term success.

“We are always looking for the time when you reach what we call the impact level—a point where you create a more effective, facilitative trading environment. I have full confidence in your ability to achieve this,” Clark said.

The programme, funded by Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) of the United Kingdom, focused on strengthening customs reforms, with emphasis on Post Clearance Audit and risk-based compliance management. Its conclusion marks another milestone in NCS’s efforts to enhance ease of doing business, strengthen compliance, and position Nigeria as a competitive and reliable trading partner on the global stage.
