Police-led joint security forces in Anambra State have successfully contained attempts by miscreants to breach public peace in Onitsha following the state government’s directive on the temporary closure of markets.

The Anambra State Police Command, working in collaboration with the military, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and other security agencies, said proactive deployments and sustained patrols have ensured calm across the commercial city and its environs.

According to the Command, joint security operatives effectively deterred and neutralised all forms of disruptive activities, preventing criminal elements from exploiting the market closure to foment unrest or threaten public safety.

The Police also raised concern over the activities of some individuals using social media platforms to incite violence, spread misinformation, and circulate unverified videos about the security situation in Onitsha. Authorities stressed that the city remains calm and firmly under control.
Security operations are currently being coordinated by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, under the directive of the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, who has ordered heightened vigilance and strict enforcement of public safety measures.

The Command urged residents, traders, and visitors to remain law-abiding and to fully comply with the state government’s directive, noting that the temporary measure was introduced in the overall interest of peace and security.

Police said security monitoring, patrols, and confidence-building operations will continue across strategic locations to maintain order and protect lives and property.
