HOPE FOR RETIREES AS GOV KEFAS RELEASES ₦5BN FOR GRATUITIES, DEATH BENEFITS

Gov Kefas Agbu of Taraba State

In a landmark decision that has brought immense relief and renewed hope to retirees and families of deceased workers, the Executive Governor of Taraba State, Dr Agbu Kefas, has approved and released the sum of ₦5 billion for the payment of long-outstanding gratuities and death benefits across the state.

The decisive intervention marks a major step in addressing pension liabilities that have lingered for years, underscoring Governor Kefas’ commitment to social justice, workers’ welfare, and responsible governance.

Following the release of the funds, the Ministry of Finance, Budget and Economic Planning announced that a screening exercise for eligible beneficiaries will commence on Monday, February 2, 2026, at the Ministry’s headquarters. The exercise will cover retirees from 2015, as well as a final mop-up of outstanding beneficiaries from the 2013 and 2014 cohorts, paving the way for prompt and transparent disbursement.

In a statement by the Commissioner of Information and Re-orientation, Barr. Zainab Usman Jalingo, the development has drawn widespread commendation from labour leaders, pensioners, and stakeholders across the state, who described the ₦5 billion release as a defining moment in the effort to restore dignity to public service in Taraba State.

Many observers noted that at a time of persistent economic pressures nationwide, Governor Kefas’ action reflects fiscal courage, compassionate leadership, and genuine concern for the elderly and vulnerable.

The move reinforces the administration’s resolve to confront inherited challenges head-on, honour obligations to workers, and build a state anchored on fairness, accountability, and empathy.

With this intervention, Governor Kefas has once again demonstrated that leadership is measured not by promises alone, but by purposeful action that delivers tangible relief to the people.
