The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has condemned in strong terms the recent terrorist attack on Woro and neighbouring communities in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, describing the assault as a cowardly act against innocent and defenceless citizens.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, by the Director, Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the DHQ expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and extended heartfelt condolences to families affected by the attack, while commending the courage and resilience of the people of Woro for standing firm against extremist intimidation.
According to the Defence Headquarters, the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) recognises and applauds the indomitable Nigerian spirit consistently demonstrated by communities targeted by terrorists. This spirit, the DHQ noted, was clearly reflected in Woro and surrounding communities, whose residents refused to abandon their constitutional loyalty, values and way of life despite threats from violent extremists.
The DHQ recalled that terrorists had earlier attempted to infiltrate Woro village under the guise of seeking permission to conduct a preaching and indoctrination session, a request firmly rejected by the villagers. Upon being alerted, the military promptly deployed troops to dominate the area through sustained patrols, surveillance and other security measures over an extended period.
Despite these proactive efforts, the terrorists later returned in a cowardly reprisal, attacking innocent citizens in a failed attempt to instil fear and undermine community resistance.
The Defence Headquarters urged Nigerians to remain steadfast in their faith in the Constitution, their personal beliefs and the shared national values that unite the country. It emphasised that national unity, resilience and collective resolve remain the strongest defence against violent extremist ideologies.
The DHQ also called on all Nigerians, regardless of ethnic, religious or regional background, to reject all forms of ideological indoctrination promoted by extremist groups, stressing that such groups thrive on division, fear and coercion.
Reaffirming its commitment to the protection of lives, property and democratic ideals, the Defence Headquarters assured the public that military operations—working in synergy with other security agencies—are being intensified to track down and bring to justice those responsible for the attack, as well as all terrorist elements operating across the country.
The DHQ further encouraged continued cooperation between citizens and security agencies, noting that timely intelligence and community support remain critical to defeating terrorism and securing lasting peace nationwide.
