The Honourable Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Bernard M. Doro, received a delegation from Yakubu Gowon University, formerly the University of Abuja, on a courtesy visit to the Ministry to discuss enhanced collaboration on humanitarian and poverty reduction initiatives.
During the meeting, the Minister emphasized the importance of coordination, data-driven policies, and effective use of the National Social Register in strengthening humanitarian interventions across Nigeria. She also reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to implementing the One Humanitarian and One Poverty Reduction Response System, designed to improve synergy among stakeholders and eliminate duplication of efforts.
The delegation was led by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Hakeem Fawehinmi, who commended the Minister for the impactful initiatives under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He noted that as the only public university in the Federal Capital Territory, Yakubu Gowon University is uniquely positioned to support national development through research and policy insights.
Professor Fawehinmi also raised infrastructure challenges at the university, including the poor condition of the Giri Campus and Staff Quarters, as well as a shortage of student accommodation.
Other members of the delegation included Council Member Professor Ashom Musa Maisamari; Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Rosemary Udeozor; Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor M. Umaru Ndagi; Acting Registrar Sambo Mohammed; University Bursar Shiva Rae Kondoun; and University Librarian Professor Ebele N. Anyaoku.
The meeting highlighted a mutual commitment to leveraging research, data, and coordinated interventions to improve humanitarian outcomes and poverty reduction across Nigeria.
