The Director-General of the Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Alhaji Abbas Garba Idriss said the award given to him recently by PEOPLE AND POWER Magazine as the Most Outstanding Director of Environmental Management of the Year in Nigeria has shown that people were watching and mindful of their activities in environmental management.
Abbas was responding to the award presented to him in his office by the management team of the Magazine led by the Editor-in-Chief, Mr. Ikechi Enwereji.
According to the FEMA boss, he was initially skeptical when he was informed about the award because he did not consider whatever he had achieved at FEMA as worthy of the award.
“Later, the Editor-in-Chief who had interviewed me in the past called to convince me about the genuineness of the award which according to Enwereji was not for sale. He mentioned about three personalities who had earlier been honoured by the Magazine two of whom are well known to me and these are the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isah Ibrahim Pantami, and the Director-General of NITDA, Mallam Kashifu Inua Abduallhi.”
“I discovered that both of them had performed creditably well and deserved the award. On my own part, I did not know that I have achieved that much to deserve such award by PEOPLE AND POWER Magazine.”
“It took me by surprise. This is to show that people are watching what we are doing. Permit me to say one thing which relates to this scenario and a religious inclination. In Islam, Prophet Mohammed said people’s judgement is God’s judgement, because when you are serving humanity irrespective of colour, tribe, religion, sex, or social class the need to be of help in times of disaster comes first before trying to know which tribe or religion.”
“So we are all one and the purpose of creation is to serve God and God has also set some rules that if we are doing certain good, we are doing so to Him. So permit me to say the PEOPLE AND POWER Magazine has seen what we are doing and chose to appreciate us with this golden and expensive award.”
The Director-General stated further that the award was not for him only but the entire FEMA staff particularly the Public Relations Unit which has done tremendously well in propagating activities of the Agency on most media platforms.
Earlier in his speech, Editor-in-Chief of the Magazine, Ikechi Enwereji had explained that his organization was moved to honour Abbas for the magnificent job he was doing in environmentally managing the Federal Capital Territory.
He pointed out that from research, it was discovered that the FEMA boss was providing a “functioning leadership” which made it possible for the FCT to wear a pleasant look.
He emphasised that his organization’s award was not for sale but given to personalities or organizations that have made outstanding contributions in their various fields of endeavor.
“Therefore, we are here to honour Alhaji Abbas Garba Idriss for showing exemplary leadership at FEMA in the management of the Federal Capital Territory,” he said.
