A 32-year-old married man, identified as Sunday Ukeme, has blamed the consumption of alcohol for his shameful behaviour defiling a 13 years old girl kept under the custody of his wife.
The suspect who has been arrested by detectives attached to the Akodo Police Division, Lagos for the defilement of his neighbour’s daughter (name withheld) committed the offence in Idaso town, Ibeju Lekki about 2230hrs of September 20, 2021.
Disclosing the arrest on Sunday in a statement, the Lagos State Police Command’s spokesperson, CSP Adekunle Ajisebutu said the girl was left with the suspect’s wife, who had gone on a night vigil in one of the churches in the neighbourhood.
It was learnt that the victim’s mother had kept the girl in the custody of the suspect’s wife, Mary Sunday when she (the victim’s mother) travelled out of the town for three weeks.
According to the victim’s mother who reported the case at the police station, said the daughter told her that she was defiled by the suspect when she returned from her journey.
Consequent upon the report lodged at the Police Station on October 4, 2021, detectives immediately arrested the suspect. During interrogation, the Sunday Ukeme confessed to the crime but pleaded for mercy, blaming his shameful, immoral and criminal act on the influence of alcohol.
The victim has since been taken to the hospital for medical attention while the case has been transferred to the Gender Unit of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti for diligent investigation and prosecution on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, CP Hakeem Odumosu.
The CP while promising to protect every girl child and other vulnerable persons in the state, vows to prosecute such paedophiles with the unbridled sexual urge for minors.
