A 50-year-old man identified as Diran Elijah has died at a hotel in Agbado, Ogun State, after having sex with his former wife, Idowu.
Idowu, who has remarried and has two children with her new husband, is said to have split from Elijah four years ago.
The ex-couple rekindled their romance recently after Elijah called her and they agreed to meet at the hotel around 10 p.m. on Sunday. Elijah was said to be resting after a pleasant time in bed with Idowu when he became unresponsive and gasped for air. The woman was said to have raised the alarm, but it was too late because he was said to have died in the hotel.
According to a source close to the woman, she (Idowu) had taken out a loan from a microfinance bank and was having trouble repaying it. Elijah, she claimed, invited her to the hotel and promised to assist her in repaying a portion of the loan.
“They were ex-lovers,” the source said. They had two children as a couple, but both of their children died. They divorced and remarried in the following years. She took out a loan from a microfinance institution and was unable to repay it. She was sleeping in a church after the bank sealed the house where she and her current husband live in Ifo.
“Elijah contacted her and offered to help her repay a portion of the loan. After they had sex, he died. The police arrested her, but the man’s family stated that they would not pursue any charges against her.”
Another source familiar with the incident said the deceased and Idowu were ex-couple, adding that the police were unable to prove the woman’s involvement in his death.
“The woman was his wife, and they had two children together,” he explained. About four years ago, they divorced. The woman remarried and has two children from her second marriage. The man has also married and has a child with another woman. He recently took his wife to Ilesa, his hometown (Osun State).
“He obtained the phone number of his ex-wife and requested that she pay him a visit.” They went to the hotel, and he passed out after having sex. Before they could get him out of the hotel, he died. His body was transported to Ilesa.
The family stated that they were not interested in pursuing any legal action. The death was unexpected and unnatural, and the suspect was released on bail.”
DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident, saying the two families had agreed to settle the matter amicably.
