The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has said it is set to partner with the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Giri Branch to tackle flooding, especially at Giri in Gwagwalada Area Council of the FCT.
The Director-General of FEMA, Alhaji Abbas Garba Idriss who received the executives of the NSE on a courtesy visit in his office, appealed to them to bring their professionalism to bear to end the perennial flooding in the FCT.
He explained that this could be achieved, through proper land use planning, and integration of an efficient water defence mechanism. He also noted that appropriate design could reduce the flood vulnerability; quality improvement in construction, provision of sea walls, flood protection structures, drainage systems, and earth retention schemes among others.
In a statement by the Head, Public Relations Unit of FEMA, Nkechi Isa said, Alhaji Idriss described the engineering profession as dynamic, also noted that engineers play a vital role in town planning. “Engineering infrastructure is vital in reducing flood risk in a city like the FCT.”
The FEMA boss challenged the NSE not to wait for the government, but to report construction infractions within their environment in order to save lives.
Speaking further, he advised that they could channel their reports through the 112 emergency toll-free number, FEMA’s website: www.fema.abj.gov.ng of through the FCTA Citizens Engagement Website and App for proper actions.
Earlier, the leader of the delegation, Engineer Hamid Abdulkarim said they were in FEMA to inform and invite the Agency to participate in its annual public lecture.
He commended FEMA for the job they are doing adding that he was proud to be associated with that kind of foresight which is why they want the partnership.
