Two days after a Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) KADA departed NNS Beecroft jetty to Guinea Bissau, as part of its efforts at strengthening and enhancing security in the West African Sub-Region, Commander, NNS BEECROFT on Monday handed over two rescued Ghanaian fishermen to the representatives of the Ghana Consulate in Lagos.
The two fishermen, according to a statement by the Information Officer, Western Naval Command, Apapa, Commander Edward Yeibo said that they were rescued on August 2, 2022, by the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) PROSPERITY, while patrolling 10 nautical miles North East of Dangote Quays, Ibeju Lekki Lagos.
The victims identified as Mr. Francis Cudjoe and Mr. John Qualcoo were recovered to NNS BEECROFT, Naval Base Apapa, and were admitted for medical care and attention.
It was learned that they were rescued while floating in the water. However, further investigation revealed that the men were actually four in number but two of them had drowned before the arrival of NNS PROSPERITY at the scene.
While handing them over, the Commander Naval Base BEECROFT, Commodore Malami Haruna commiserated with the Ghanaian Community on the loss of the other two fishermen.
He used the opportunity to reiterate the need for seafarers to always emplace all safety measures including the use of life jackets within the maritime domain.
Cdre Haruna further stressed the commitment of the Nigerian Navy towards ensuring the safety and security of all seafarers within Nigeria’s maritime domain.
