The members of the 39th Regular Course of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Kaduna have donated Medical equipment to the Nigerian Navy Reference Hospital (NNRH), Navy Town, Ojo, Lagos.
The medical equipment, which included an Ultrasound and Diathermy Machines were unveiled by their wives under the aegis of the “39th Regular Course Angels,” led by the wife of the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 81 Division, Nigerian Army, Dr (Mrs) Ada Ajunwa.
The members under the umbrella: 39th Regular Course United Welfare Association was formed to cater for the needs of both servicing and retired members as well as members of the society.
The GOC’s wife and the retinue of other Angels were received at the NNRH by Surgeon Commander Chidiebere Anyanwu, on behalf of the Commander, Nigerian Navy Reference Hospital, Ojo, Surgeon Captain Ahmadu Shehu Mohammed.
The equipment were procured by the officers of Course 39 NDA in commemoration of their 35th anniversary in the service of the Nigerian Army and to humanity.
Shortly before unveiling the equipment at the Medical Imagery Centre of the hospital, Mrs Ada Ajunwa, who spoke on behalf of the Angels, said their husbands considered donating hospital equipment because healthcare is one of the pinpoints that touches on humanity considering that the 39th RC Welfare Association is a humanitarian gesture and non-profit organization.
“Our husbands thought about it and concluded that the best to work with is medical equipment. They have assisted many orphans as well as military and civilian employees and friends of the military.
“In addition, their plan is to reach out to many organizations and persons, hospitals, sick persons, widows and their family members. The celebration of the 35th anniversary in service began on the 12th till the 18th of September 2022. Some medical equipment is also donated in Kaduna hospital,” she explained.
In an interview with our correspondent, Surgeon Commander Chidiebere Anyanwu expressed appreciation for the donation by members of the 39th RC. He explained that the machines would assist the hospital a great deal in carrying out surgeries and minimising time during surgery in the hospital.
“We would deploy the ultrasound machine to the maternity room to enable us to scan women who are pregnant instead of moving them from the maternity room to the imaging centre. We would scan them and decide if they are going to have the operation or delivered through the normal process.
“While the Diathermy machine will help minimise blood lost during surgeries. It will also go a long way to shorten the operation time; reduce the quantity of blood we are going to lose and reduce the need for blood transfusion.”
The Angels later had a guided tour of the hospital facilities.
Nigerian Navy Reference Hospital, Ojo, is the Navy’s apex hospital. It is the two multi-specialist tertiary health care facilities operated by the Nigerian Navy with 150 beds capacity. It is the only government tertiary health care facility located in the densely populated environment stretching from Orile to Badagry.
It had its humble beginnings in the early 1980s but was commissioned as a hospital on 1 March 1985 by the late Rear Admiral Augustus Aikhomu to cater for the health care needs of naval personnel, their families and civilians within the Lagos general area.
