ABIA ROLLS OUT CASHLESS PAYMENT SYSTEM FOR GREEN SHUTTLE BUSES

The Abia State Government has commenced the full rollout of the Abia Connect Card, the official cashless payment system for the Green Shuttle Bus Service, in a move aimed at modernising public transportation and delivering a seamless commuting experience across the state.

In a statement by the Honourable Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, the initiative was described as a deliberate step by the administration of Governor Alex Chioma Otti to build a digital, transparent and efficient transport ecosystem across Abia State.

According to the statement, the Abia Connect Card — also known as the “Abia State Card” — eliminates inconveniences associated with cash payments, including delays, disputes over change and revenue leakages.

“With the Abia Connect Card, commuting becomes as simple as a single tap. It is efficient, reliable and designed to ensure that our public transport system works effectively for everyone,” the Commissioner stated.

HOW TO OBTAIN AND USE THE CARD

The first card is currently free of charge for all residents. Cards can be obtained at designated Green Shuttle terminals and authorised agent locations across Aba and Umuahia.

Prospective users are required to present their ABSSIN to receive the card. Residents who do not yet have an ABSSIN can generate one independently via the Abia Pay website.

After funding the card — subject to a minimal ₦50 top-up charge — commuters are required to tap the card on the payment device upon boarding. A confirmation “Welcome” sound validates successful payment. The card does not expire, and loaded funds remain valid without time limitation.

SERVICE ROUTES AND FARES

The Green Shuttle Service operates across major inter-city and intra-city routes to ensure connectivity and affordability.

Inter-City Services:
Aba – Umuahia – Aba: ₦800
Umuahia – Ohafia – Umuahia: ₦1,000
Umuahia City Services (Flat Rate: ₦150):
Ubakala – Isi Gate (Terminal)
Isi Gate – Tower

Opopo Junction – Park

The Abia State Government urged residents to take full advantage of the ongoing free card distribution, noting that adoption of the Abia Connect Card supports a structured, accountable and technology-driven public transport system.

“Our objective remains clear: to make Abia State’s transport system a model of innovation, efficiency and transparency in Nigeria. We encourage all residents to obtain their cards and be part of this transformative journey toward a smarter Abia,” the statement added.
