The Liberian First Lady, Mrs. Clar Weah has called for effective and concerted actions to end all forms of violence against women across all sectors to ensure their empowerment.
Mrs. Weah stated this on Tuesday during the commencement of the ECOWAS Parliament Joint Committee delocalized meeting in Monrovia, Liberia with the theme “Empowerment of Women in the ECOWAS region”.
She noted that despite the much-improved awareness of women’s worth in society, a lot of work is required to ensure women’s emancipation and recognition across the ECOWAS region.
According to Mrs. Weah, it is imperative for concerted actions to be taken to find permanent solutions to all issues affecting women in the region aside from politics or business.
Mrs. Weah also noted that the George Weah led government has demonstrated commitments through several policies in tackling rape and other forms of violence towards women and girls.
According to the speaker ECOWAS Parliaments, Sidie Tunis, ECOWAS on its part has made a clear commitment to prioritize gender equality and women’s empowerment in its framework of the regional integration process.
Tunis reiterated the need and urgency to move from words to actions, extolling ECOWAS Parliament’s demonstrable commitments to ensuring women’s empowerment in the ECOWAS region.
“At the just concluded 2021 1st Extra-Ordinary Session, held in Freetown, Sierra Leone, from March 29 to April 2, 2021, the ECOWAS Parliament considered and adopted its Strategic Plan for the 5th Legislature, this Plan identified the enhancement of gender equality and women’s empowerment as a major strategic are under the Parliament’s participation programme.
Mr. Tunis however called for collective efforts to implement already existing laws to ensure the empowerment of women in the region.
