AFN REAFFIRMS STRONG WELFARE, MEDICAL SUPPORT FOR WOUNDED PERSONNEL

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has reaffirmed the Armed Forces of Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to the welfare, care and dignity of military personnel wounded in action, following the circulation of a video on social media that raised concerns about injured soldiers.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, by the Director Defence Information (DDI), Major General Samaila Uba, the DHQ described the claims as misleading, stressing that the welfare of wounded personnel remains a top moral and operational priority of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN).

According to the Major General Uba, all personnel injured during operations are entitled to comprehensive medical care under established Armed Forces medical policies. Treatment is provided both within Nigeria and abroad, depending on the nature and severity of injuries. Critically wounded personnel are routinely evacuated to reputable overseas medical facilities when advanced care is required.

Within the country, injured soldiers receive medical attention across the AFN’s network of military hospitals and medical centres, with referrals to specialised civilian facilities where necessary—fully funded by the government. Medical evacuation, surgery, rehabilitation, prosthetics and long-term care are integral components of this structured support system.

Beyond immediate medical treatment, the AFN also ensures favourable discharge and medical boarding arrangements for personnel whose injuries prevent continued service. These include access to pensions, gratuities and other statutory benefits in line with existing regulations. Families of personnel who pay the ultimate price are equally supported through death benefits, insurance payouts, pensions, educational support for dependants and sustained engagement by military authorities.

The Defence Headquarters emphasised that wounded personnel also benefit from rehabilitation programmes, counselling services, family support structures and continuous command oversight. It noted that many injured soldiers who have received care and rehabilitation remain living testimonies to the Armed Forces’ commitment, resilience and compassion.

Nigeria’s participation in the Invictus Games was also highlighted as a clear demonstration of the AFN’s dedication to the physical recovery, mental resilience and social reintegration of wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women. The initiative has continued to inspire confidence, restore morale and promote public awareness of the sacrifices made by military personnel.

While acknowledging the need for continuous improvement in welfare systems, the DHQ welcomed constructive feedback and cautioned against sweeping generalisations that undermine the efforts of dedicated professionals working daily to care for wounded colleagues and honour fallen heroes.

The Armed Forces of Nigeria reaffirmed their commitment to transparency, accountability and, above all, the welfare and dignity of the men and women who risk their lives in defence of the nation.
