The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has reaffirmed the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, cautioning officers against interference in civil and land-related matters.
The Police Commissioner made this known while hosting members of the Association of Presidents General of Anambra Town Unions Communities at the Police Command Headquarters, Awka, on October 3, 2025.
The meeting was convened to strengthen police–community relations and to promote peaceful resolution of disputes, especially those arising from land ownership and boundary disagreements.
In his remarks, CP Orutugu restated the IGP’s position that the Police must not intervene in purely civil matters such as land cases, inheritance disputes, or ownership claims, emphasizing that such issues fall within the jurisdiction of the courts.
“Police officers are not to interfere in land or civil disputes. Such matters should be addressed through lawful judicial processes. Resorting to self-help or violence only leads to breakdown of peace and unnecessary loss of lives and property,” the Commissioner cautioned.
He urged residents of Anambra State to always seek justice through the courts, assuring that the Command remains committed to enforcing the law impartially and maintaining public order.
Responding, the President of the Association of Presidents General of Anambra Town Unions commended the Police Commissioner for his proactive engagement and clarity on the IGP’s directive. He pledged the cooperation of all town unions in sensitizing their communities to resolve disputes through due process rather than confrontation.
The meeting ended with a renewed commitment by both parties to deepen collaboration in promoting peace, justice, and lawful coexistence across Anambra State.
