Police operatives in Anambra State have arrested a suspected member of a criminal syndicate allegedly involved in kidnapping, armed robbery, and car snatching, and believed to be linked to a proscribed secessionist group.
The suspect, identified as Kalu Okafor, 43, was apprehended by officers of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Awkuzu, during a targeted operation in Okpoko, Ogbaru Local Government Area, in the early hours of Tuesday, December 3, 2025.
According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, the operation led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle, a pump-action gun, two AK-47 magazines, 88 rounds of ammunition, two face masks, and two pairs of gloves.
Police said the arrest followed confessional statements by another suspected gang member, Chukwudi Nwakpa, who is already in custody. Nwakpa reportedly revealed that the gang routinely handed over their firearms to Okafor for safekeeping after each kidnapping operation. He also alleged that Okafor received a share of the ransom collected from victims.
SP Ikenga added that the newly arrested suspect is currently assisting investigators with intelligence aimed at apprehending other fleeing members of the syndicate and recovering more weapons.
The police assured that further updates would be provided as investigations progress.
