The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed that it is continuing its investigation into the death of a 17-year-old apprentice, Chikamso Ejiofor, who was found lifeless in a residential compound in the Umuzocha area of Awka.
According to a statement released by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikoye Orutugu, has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to conduct a thorough and discreet probe to determine the exact cause of death.
The incident was first reported to the police on the morning of October 5, 2025, at approximately 10:55 a.m., when a resident informed authorities that she discovered the motionless body of a young man upon returning home from a church vigil. Officers from the Central Police Station, Awka, were immediately dispatched to the scene. The body was photographed and transported to a nearby hospital, where a medical doctor confirmed the individual dead.
Subsequent investigations identified the deceased as Chikamso Ejiofor, aged 17, who was serving as an apprentice. His parents were located and informed of the development. However, they later submitted a formal letter and sworn affidavit stating their decision not to pursue the case, reportedly citing prior concerns over their son’s alleged behavioral issues.
While acknowledging the family’s position, CP Orutugu emphasized that the Command has a statutory duty to investigate all cases of unnatural death, regardless of external pressure or consent. He assured the public that the investigation would continue in line with due process and the pursuit of justice.
“The Command remains committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that every case, especially those involving the loss of life, is treated with the seriousness it deserves,” the statement added.
Investigations are ongoing, and the Command has urged members of the public with relevant information to come forward.
