The Anambra State Police Command has recorded the death of a 21-year-old suspected armed robber and notorious cultist, Chukwuka Solomon, following an attempted escape during a police operation in Awka.
According to the statement by SP Tochukwu Ikenga, Police Public Relations Officer, Anambra State Police Command, operatives attached to the Special Anti-Cultism Squad, Enugu-Ukwu, in the early hours of 16th February 2026, conducted a search operation at the suspect’s hideout in Amikwo, Awka.
During the operation, the suspect allegedly attempted to escape, leading to circumstances that resulted in his death. The police recovered one pump-action gun, two locally made pistols, and some expended ammunition from the scene.
The operatives also successfully repelled an ambush by other gang members who attempted to attack the police team during the search. Blood stains found at the scene suggest that some of the fleeing suspects may have escaped with varying degrees of bullet injuries.
The suspect was earlier apprehended through the collaborative efforts of members of the Amikwo community, who handed him over to the police following reports that he had been terrorising residents with firearms.
During interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed to being a member of the Supreme Vikings Confraternity, also known as “Baggars,” and admitted to possessing operational weapons linked to the group. He also disclosed that he worked for an individual popularly known as “Aza Man,” alleged to be involved in criminal activities disrupting peace in Awka and surrounding areas.
Police authorities disclosed that investigations are ongoing, with operatives acting on leads provided to apprehend the alleged gang leader and other members of the criminal network.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu fwc mnips PhD, reiterated the Command’s resolve to intensify efforts against cultism, armed robbery, and other violent crimes across the state.
Further developments will be communicated as investigations progress.
