It was all about eulogizing, patting at the back with sonorous voices for a gentleman officer that touched lives and transformed facilities better than he met them a few years ago.
The cool breeze from the ocean sets the atmosphere right for an evening of drinks, music and food in honour of the outgoing Commanding Officer, 65 Battalion, Bonny Cantonment, Lt Col BI Amajuoyi, who has been posted out.
On Saturday night, the Carmel’s Officers’ Mess Bonny Cantonment, the venue of the sent forth became electric as officers of the battalion and honourary members trooped in gorgeously dressed for the occasion.
Also present were the Chief of Staff, 81 Division, Brig Gen Ismail Oloyede, Brig Gen Mohammed, and the incoming Commanding Officer, Lt Col MA Lawal among other civilian dignitaries.
In their tributes, some of the honourary members who described the former CO’s posting with mixed feelings said he has the capability to manage complex issues and have the tact to transform situations.
Particularly, Dr. Toyin referred to Lt Col Amajuoyi as “an amazing person who everyone wants to identify with and exemplify.”
To the incoming CO, “Amajuoyi is a friend, mentor, teacher whom they have come a long way in their career.”
In his remarks, Lt Col Amajuoyi thanked officers and soldiers of the Battalion for their outstanding contributions to the successes recorded as the Commanding Officer.
“I am elated for honouring me and making it a reality. When I looked at the portrait presented, I am humbled. Before now, the mess was fully abandoned. It was in a horrible and disheveled state, which motivated me to call for assistance and we got it fixed.
“With the help of honourary members, we built new conveniences and barbecue spots to the standard that the former GOC came to the commission. The CO’s house was renovated and furnished to taste. I also touched the Medical Reception Station (MRS) too.
We made some secret arrest of kidnappers hence kidnapping that was becoming an issue in Island became a thing of the past,” he reiterated.
Awards, plaques, and souvenirs were presented to deserving officers, especially to Lt Roberts Atsagu who emerged as the best swimmer in 81 Division, Nigerian Army Competitions.
