No fewer than 69 top military officers of the Nigeria Army may be on their way out of service following the premature death of the former Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt Gen Ibrahim Attahiru in an unfortunate plane crash last Friday.
The Army Chief died on a Beachcraft 350 Airforce plane that was conveying him, along with other 10 military officers to Kaduna while on an official assignment.
He was buried with full military honour with other officers at the National Military Cemetery in Abuja on Saturday.
Following his death, it was gathered that Federal Government is frantically in search of replacement since a vacuum can’t be left in the command considering that the battle to win the war against insurgents, banditry, obliterate other secessionists and other forms of criminality including kidnappings is of paramount importance.
Already, it was gathered that there are about 70 Major Generals in the kitty of the Nigeria Army and only one will be selected to be COAS.
Traditionally in the military, the majority, or the entire top brace will be going on compulsory retirement if an officer of junior officer in seniority roll is appointed.
Although that tradition has not been faithfully followed in recent times as there exist in the service Major Generals that served between 37-38 years in service.
A source says that the following Major Generals might have one of them becoming the next Chief of Army Staff as permutations are rife.
