The Acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede has expressed optimism to revamp the army and its Command structure to make it more efficient and combat-ready.

He disclosed that his cardinal agenda is to make the force have the capacity to bite harder and deal with enemies of the state.

Gen Oluyede spoke at the closing ceremony of the 2nd Regimental Sergeant Majors (RSMs) Convention 2024 at the Nigerian Army School of Finance and Administration (NASFA) in Apapa, Lagos on Thursday.

He advised the RSM to inculcate the knowledge gained and share it with their junior officers in their units.

He reminded them of the role of the RSMs in curbing inter-agency crises and urged them to work towards halting the menace of drug use within the Army.

General Oluyede cautioned the RSMs to exhibit exemplary qualities and be highly responsive in discharging their duties while encouraging them to develop a positive attitude to work.

Explaining his vision for the Nigerian Army, he wants to see an army with troops that have good welfare packages, which by extension, will spur them to do their job well and secure the country.

Adumbrating noted that he has been pivotal to the combat against terrorists and curbing other organised crimes in the past five years, hence he would leverage those gains to rout every form of insecurity.

Gen Oluyede promised that within the next few weeks, Nigerians should expect some level of rejigging of the army and reshuffling of key commanders that would enable him to achieve his command objectives.

In his words: “My vision is to have a good army, a set of troops with good welfare packages that will encourage them to do their job well and secure Nigeria, because I have been part of the architecture, you will expect some re-jiging and some reshufflement and we will move on from there.”

The 2024 Regimental Sergeant Majors’ Convention at the Nigerian Army brought together the custodians of military discipline and operational excellence for a landmark gathering.

As the backbone of military operations, Regimental Sergeant Majors (RSMs) play a pivotal role in bridging the gap between officers and non-commissioned officers.

They ensure discipline, enforce standards, and act as advisors to Commanding Officers, making their contributions indispensable to the Armed Forces’ successes.

This year’s convention themed: “Fostering Improved Discipline and Regimentation in the Nigerian Army for Enhanced Capacity to Accomplished Constitutional Responsibilities within a Joint Environment,” highlighted the evolving responsibilities of RSMs in an era marked by complex security challenges.
