The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, on Tuesday strengthened ties with former Nigerian Heads of State, Generals Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida and Abdulsalami Abubakar, and the Niger State Government, pledging enhanced security, operational excellence, and closer collaboration with national and state authorities.
According to the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, during the visits, Lieutenant General Shaibu briefed the elder statesmen and state officials on ongoing initiatives to improve training, doctrine, and operational readiness across the Army. He highlighted those exercises are being conducted at Army training institutions to provide personnel with practical, mission-oriented training, while assessing operational capabilities and identifying areas requiring additional deployments or new formations.

The COAS emphasized Niger State’s strategic importance, noting its vast landmass and relevance to national security. Drawing on his personal connection with the state, where he previously served as Training and Doctrine Commander, he pledged that the Army would consolidate resources and leverage modern technology to tackle emerging security challenges. He also disclosed operational visits to the 31st, 11th, and 18th Brigades in Bida to evaluate gaps and deploy resources to maintain stability.
Former Heads of State, Generals Babangida and Abubakar, welcomed the COAS, commending his dedication, expertise, and leadership. They praised the Nigerian Army for upholding professionalism and operational excellence, congratulating Lieutenant General Shaibu on his appointment and offering prayers for wisdom and courage in navigating contemporary security challenges.

Representing Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, Deputy Governor Dr. Yakubu Garba received the COAS and lauded the Army’s proactive support in tackling security concerns. He expressed confidence that sustained collaboration with the Nigerian Army would restore peace and protect communities.
“We are confident that, with the partnership of the Nigerian Army, we will overcome current challenges and safeguard lives and communities,” Garba said.
The visits underscore the Nigerian Army’s commitment to operational excellence, collaboration with government authorities at all levels, and the protection of Nigeria’s national security interests.
