Customs Area Controller Lagos Industrial Command, Comptroller Nsikan Umoh met with stakeholders on Tuesday, September 26, 2023.
Comptroller Umoh said the meeting was aimed at addressing challenges hindering stakeholders from the payment of Excise duties as and when due.
She said, “When I resumed here as the new Customs Area Controller, I was handed over 89 functional factories, but when I went through the payment schedules and confirmation, there were some irregularities.
“Factories are expected to pay their duty per production, but I noticed some did their assessment in March and paid duty in July, which is not right.
The CAC clarified that the discrepancy might not necessarily be the fault of anyone but may result from the reporting system.
She said, “Probably, the irregularities could be from the reporting system, so I have this one-on-one interaction just to ensure everyone is on the same page.”
Comptroller Umoh further stated that the new Nigeria Customs Service Act, 2023, will also be discussed with manufacturers as sanctions have increased.
“We want our stakeholders to understand the provision of the new Customs Act, 2023, because things have changed, sanctions have increased, and there are penalties for delayed payment,’’ she stated.
She disclosed that she is ready to assist manufacturers who experience challenges in paying their expected government dues.
