The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu fwc mnips PhD, has reiterated that effective policing can only be achieved through active collaboration between security agencies and the public. The police chief delivered the message on Thursday, during a roundtable discussion on the challenges of policing at the sub-national level, held at the IPBS Boardroom of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. He was represented by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ikenga Tochukwu.
The event, themed “The Nigerian Police and the Challenges of Policing at the Sub-National Level: Is State Police a Viable Option?”, was organised by the Institute for Peace, Security and Development Studies in partnership with the Society for Peace Studies and Practice (SPSP). It drew participation from security experts, traditional rulers, academics, civil society organisations and the media.

Notable attendees included retired Air Vice Marshal Chiobi, Special Adviser on Security to the Anambra State Governor; HRH Igwe P. O. Omachonu; Prof. Amaka Joe-Iguh, and other scholars and stakeholders, who shared perspectives on strengthening policing structures across the state.
Speaking at the forum, CP Orutugu stressed that trust, cooperation and community involvement are essential ingredients for effective policing. He noted that achieving lasting peace and safety in Anambra requires “unity of purpose” between the police and residents, urging citizens to show greater commitment to supporting law enforcement efforts.
The Commissioner reaffirmed the Command’s dedication to expanding community-police partnerships and improving the state’s overall security framework.
