Police operatives in Lagos have foiled a spirited attempt by a 45-year-old man to kill himself by jumping into the Lagos Lagoon over N500,000 debt.
PEOPLE AND POWER gathered that as Nigerians were enjoying the public holidays with their Muslim brothers and sisters across the country, Adeyinka Abiodun last Friday at about 1350 hours was on his way seeking death.
He was reportedly at the verge of jumping into the Lagoon when policemen deployed to third mainland bridge intercepted him.
He was rescued and taken to Bariga Police Station for questioning and debriefing. Abiodun who resides at Abaranje Road, Ikotun Lagos told detectives that, in March this year, he procured a loan of #390,000 with monthly repayment plan for six months and accrued interest of #142,287:25 from a micro finance bank in Lagos Island, all totalling about N500,000.
According to him, the loan was collected with intent to upgrade his wine retail business, but the business failed and the money lost, thereby putting him in a difficult situation.
With his Bachelor of Science degree in Physics and a Masters degree in Business Administration, Abiodun did not bother about other options opened to him for survival, but chose suicide as a way out, which eventually failed.
Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana; a Superintendent of Police (SP) said Abiodun is currently attending medical and counselling sessions to ascertain his mental state.
He also confirmed that the Micro Finance bank (name with-held) has been contacted and they confirmed the loan adding that the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has swiftly moved in with compassion to repay the loan.
Meanwhile, worried by the rate at which people are killing themselves, the Commissioner of Police Lagos State, Hakeem Odumosu has enjoined Lagos residents to always explore other means of addressing life challenges than resorting to taking their own life, as suicide is never an option.
From police records, this is the eight suicide attempt successfully foiled by the police in Lagos, in the last two months.
The police boss has therefore called on well meaning individuals to always reach out to the needy and less privileged persons around them so as to give helping hand that would reduce the incidence of suicide.
