The Defence Headquarters has condemned the recent abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi and Niger states, assuring Nigerians of swift and decisive action to rescue the victims and bring the perpetrators to justice.

In a statement issued by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, the military described the kidnapping of 25 students from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, in Danko Wasagu LGA of Kebbi State, and the abduction of students from St. Mary’s Catholic School, Papiri, in Agwara LGA of Niger State, as “heinous crimes” that will not go unpunished.

According to General Onoja, troops are fully engaged in intensified rescue operations across affected areas, working with other security agencies and leveraging all available intelligence to track down the criminals and secure the safe return of the children.

Responding to claims by the Kebbi State Governor that the attack occurred shortly after troops were allegedly withdrawn from the school, the Defence Headquarters confirmed that an internal review is underway to establish the circumstances surrounding troop deployment at the time of the incident. It emphasized that operational decisions are typically based on security assessments and broader regional strategies.

The military assured the public that if the review uncovers any gaps, immediate corrective action will be taken to prevent similar incidents.

Reaffirming its commitment to protecting vulnerable communities, the Defence Headquarters said it is enhancing collaboration with state authorities, community leaders, and relevant stakeholders to strengthen security around schools nationwide.

It urged Nigerians to remain calm and trust in the ongoing efforts of the Armed Forces to restore peace and ensure the safe return of all abducted students.
