The suspect was tracked and later arrested while his accomplices fled on August 7, 2020 after information got to the Officer-in-charge of Zonal Monitoring Unit, SP Uba Adams that some criminal elements were smuggling arms and ammunition into the country through Imeko border.
The Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, Zone 2 Command, DSP Hauwa Idris Adamu said on Wednesday in Lagos that the team immediately swung into action and moved to Ibara Orile via Okedi Village along Abeokuta-Imeko road where they laid an ambush.
Surprisingly, she noted, “the smugglers changed their route and decided to converge elsewhere based on information from their spies who usually go before them to see if the road was free for them to move.
“While they awaited the truck arranged to convey the smuggled items to their supposed destination in a border village between Ogun and Oyo States, the operatives arrived and they all took to their heels leaving behind the smuggled items.
The items were later discovered to be weeds suspected to be Indian hemp and their motorcycles.
However, DSP Hauwa further disclosed, one of the conveyors of the exhibits, Ishola Sunday, was arrested with 10 motorcycles and the consignments.
Efforts are on to arrest the fleeing suspects as investigation has begun while the suspect would soon be charged to court for prosecution.
