DRUG WAR INTENSIFIES AS MARWA SETS BOLD 2026 TARGETS FOR NDLEA COMMANDERS

The fight against illicit drugs in Nigeria is set to gain fresh momentum in 2026 as the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), has unveiled ambitious operational targets aimed at dismantling drug cartels and expanding nationwide drug abuse sensitization.
At a high-level annual review and strategic planning meeting held at the NDLEA National Headquarters in Abuja, Marwa charged commanders across the country to build on recent record-breaking successes and deliver even stronger results in the new year.
The meeting brought together the agency’s top leadership, including members of management, zonal commanders, state and FCT commanders, airport and seaport commanders, marine unit heads, and leaders of the Strike Force and Special Operations Units.
Addressing the gathering, Marwa said the agency entered 2026 on a strong footing, having recorded historic achievements in previous years. He described the year ahead as one of “unprecedented consolidation,” particularly in Drug Supply Reduction (DSR) and Drug Demand Reduction (DDR).
“The results we achieved were significant, but we cannot afford to rest on our oars,” Marwa said. “Our 2026 goals are clear: to completely disrupt the financial lifelines of drug cartels and ensure that every community in Nigeria is sensitized against the dangers of substance abuse.”
He praised officers and men of the agency for their dedication, noting that NDLEA now commands increased respect both locally and internationally. According to him, the renewal of his tenure by the President reflects the collective impact of seizures made, arrests carried out, and convictions secured nationwide.
Marwa stressed that professionalism, discipline, and zero tolerance for compromise would remain non-negotiable, urging commanders to strengthen intelligence gathering, surveillance, and operational planning. He also called for intensified advocacy efforts, particularly in schools and communities, while directing that State Drug Control Committees be fully activated in all states down to the local government and ward levels.
Reassuring Nigerians, the NDLEA boss said the agency remains firmly committed to protecting youths, families, and communities from the devastating effects of drugs. He warned drug cartels that there would be “no vacuum or breathing space” for illicit activities in 2026.
He further encouraged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue supporting the agency with timely and credible information, emphasizing that the fight against drug abuse and trafficking is a shared national responsibility.
With renewed resolve, clearer targets, and nationwide coordination, the NDLEA is poised to deepen its impact in 2026—strengthening communities, safeguarding lives, and sustaining Nigeria’s momentum in the war against drugs.
