The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) High Impact-Based Forecast for August 23, 2022, anticipates heavy rainfall in the Federal Capital Territory on Thursday and Friday.
A statement by the Head, Public Affairs of FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Nkechi Isa, on Thursday, disclosed that the forecast will anticipate high chances of flash floods on roads and low-lying settlements, disruption of traffic due to the flash floods, and reduction of visibility in Abuja.
Reacting to the forecast, the Director General of FEMA, Alhaji Abbas Idriss has directed all emergency workers to be on red alert for these events in order to save lives and property of residents.
Idriss noted that the expected strong winds accompanying the rains could likely damage mud houses or weak structures and appealed to people residing in such structures to relocate to safer places.
According to the statement, the DG appealed to the residents of the FCT to exercise restraint during the heavy rains by disconnecting electrical appliances, avoiding parking under trees, or driving through the flood waters.
The FEMA boss further appealed to the residents to dial the 112 emergency toll-free number in the event of an emergency.
