The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Yakubu Gowon University on Friday, February 27, 2026, resolved to work towards enhanced collaboration in areas of anti-corruption education, research, and capacity building.
The resolution was reached when the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Hakeem Fawehinmi, led the management staff of the school on a courtesy visit to the Executive Chairman of the EFCC, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, at the Commission’s corporate headquarters in Jabi, Abuja.
Olukoyede, while expressing his appreciation to Professor Fawehinmi and his team for the visit, promised to expedite action towards a more engaging relationship with the University. He enjoined the Vice-Chancellor to put in more efforts at stabilizing the institution and tasked members of the management team to support the Vice-Chancellor, noting that success would not be achievable if management worked at variance with the VC.

“I want to encourage you to see that you stabilize the institution. We keep telling people to do the right thing, to follow the rules, that is what we always tell executives and heads of institutions. Follow the rules so that long after you have left office, nobody will call you to come and make a statement. It is always good to work together as a team; we want to see that institution stabilized,” he said.
Professor Fawehinmi, who disclosed that the purpose of the visit was to kindle a sustainable relationship with the EFCC, commended Olukoyede for his relentless efforts at fighting corruption and financial crimes, noting that the EFCC Chairman assumed leadership at a time Nigeria was facing huge cybercrime challenges.
“We want to commend you for the great job you are doing in fighting financial crimes. In particular, cybercrime is a very huge challenge in this country which you have been able to fight headlong. I want to thank you most sincerely and your management team for the wonderful job you are doing for the current administration,” he stated.
He expressed the University’s readiness to establish a sustainable relationship with the EFCC, assuring that the collaboration would adhere strictly to financial regulatory standards.
Speaking on areas of collaboration, Fawehinmi emphasized the need for both institutions to focus on human capacity development and sensitization of staff and students on the dangers of financial crimes. He noted that Yakubu Gowon University, being the only Federal university in the Federal Capital Territory, is well positioned to serve as a strategic partner in this initiative.
He also recalled the previously stalled plan to develop an Institute of Forensics Studies in conjunction with an Indian-based institution, where the University would have worked with the EFCC—a move overtaken by the establishment of the EFCC Academy and Cybersecurity Research Centre.
Head, Media & Publicity of the EFCC, Dele Oyewale, disclosed that the renewed engagement with Yakubu Gowon University aims to deepen collaboration in anti-corruption efforts, strengthen human capacity, and sensitize staff and students on the dangers of financial crimes, ensuring a sustainable partnership anchored on adherence to regulatory standards.
