Nine persons have been arrested by the Enugu State Police Command for conspiracy, armed robbery, cultism, unlawful possession of firearm and involvement in receiving of stolen property.
The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Daniel Ndukwe who disclosed the arrest in Enugu on Thursday gave the names of the suspects as: Victor Obute (a.k.a. Choiyi), 21, from Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area; Ebuka Omene (a.k.a. OPEC), 21 from Edemani Nsukka; Chekwube Alumona (a.k.a Electric), 22, of No. 1B Aludele Street, Nsukka; Chibuike Onoja (a.k.a. Ginger), 24 of Enugu-Ezike; and Odoh Nnaemeka (a.k.a Pastor), 24 of Enugu-Ezike.
Others include Sunday Eze (a.k.a. Badoo), 18 of Enugu-Ezike; Chijioke Anigbogu, 21, of Nsukka Town; Okpe Onyebuchi, 22, and Christian Eze, 40, both of Amalla Village in Udenu Local Governmeny Area of Enugu State.
ASP Ndukwe further disclosed that the criminal gangs had in their possession during arrest, one locally-made pistol with two live cartridges and seven motorcycles of different makes and several parts.
Analysis of the history of the gangs according to the police spokesperson indicated that Victor Obute and Ebuka Omene were arrested on August 7, 2020 by Operatives of the Command attached to Udenu Area Command while on Stop/Search duty at Inyi, along Enugu/Makurdi Expressway.
As a result, the Anti-Cultism Unit while carrying their investigation, led to the arrest of Chekwube Alumona, Chibuike Onoja, Odoh Nnaemeka and Sunday Eze in Enugu-Ezike community of the State on August 16, 2020 about 0330hrs.
It was learnt that the suspects have confessed to be members of Vikings Confraternity and a notorious armed robbery gang operating within Igbo-Etiti/Nsukka axis of the State.
However, one of the suspects, Odoh Nnaemeka, gave his residence as the gang’s criminal hideout and venue for planning and mapping out of their strategies before carrying out their criminal operations while Chijioke Anigbogu, Okpe Onyebuchi and Christian Eze were recipients of the robbed motorcycles and other criminal proceeds of the gang.
ASP Ndukwe further added that other items recovered from them included one locally-made pistol with two live cartridges; one Denstar motorcycle without registration number; one Topstar motorcycle without registration number; five Ladies’ motorcycles all without registration number; and several parts of Ladies’ motorcycles.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmad Abdurrahman while commending the Operatives for the breakthrough, charged the various Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, Heads of Tactical/Operational Departments and the entire Operatives of the Command to redouble their efforts at preventing, detecting acts of crimes and criminality in the State.
