A fake Commissioner of Police identified as Emmañuel Nwagu and a lawyer known as Ibrahim Bello, were on Monday paraded by the Lagos State Police Command for impersonation.
Also paraded were 13 other suspects for various crimes ranging from armed robbery to illicit drug trafficking and rape.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Idowu Owohunwa, who was represented by SP Benjamin Hundeyin, spokesperson of the command, called on residents to assist the police with valuable information to aid them in tracking and arresting criminals.
He was given due honour as such but upon interrogating him, he was discovered to be an impersonator.
A search conducted at his abode led to the recovery of a “Deputy Commissioner of Police warrant card, an Assistant Commissioner of Police warrant card, a Kenwood walkie-talkie, a police camouflage singlet, and a face cap were recovered”.
Hundeyin added that the fake lawyer was arrested on September 4 after a complaint from the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) in the Epe area got to the police.
It was learnt that the suspect, Ibrahim Bello, has been conducting and presenting himself as a lawyer at the Epe High/Magistrate Court for several years.
Operatives of the Command arrested the suspect, who was fully dressed as a lawyer in court. He was brought in for questioning, where he was discovered to be an impersonator.
Hundeyin said other suspects included a woman, Ganiyat Oni, 40, who was arrested on September 10, 2023, about 1300hrs, in the Igbogbo area of Ikorodu, for allegedly being in possession of a large quantity of substance suspected to be hard drugs, 97 wraps of Colos, 22 wraps of Loud, some mixture of Loud and Arizona, and a sum of N271,600 her proceeds as at the time of arrest.
Also on September 4, 2023, at about 0630hrs, a group of boys were sighted in an uncompleted building around the Seme area of Lagos State. “Upon sighting the police, all the suspects fled. The operatives recovered a Smith and Wesson pistol with 11 rounds of live ammunition. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects”.
“On September 9, 2023, about 0000hrs, operatives of the Command arrested one Bamishe Omotayo, 38, for the stealing of a Volvo car from where it was parked at Eredo axis of Epe, Lagos State.
The vehicle was recovered along the Ibadan expressway when the arrested suspect and his cohorts (who fled upon sighting the police) stopped to fuel the vehicle,” he added.
Also arrested were individuals for alleged rape, armed robbery, cultism, and defilement. And that the suspects would be prosecuted before a competent court of law.
According to SP Hundeyin, the command has recovered four firearms, two live cartridges, one expended cartridge, 11 live ammunition, and one vehicle from the culprits.
Other items recovered were two wristwatches, six phones, some quantities of weed suspected to be a variant of drugs, a walkie-talkie, police warrant cards, and a police camouflage cap and singlet.
