The audacious tendency of a man, Yemi Ayeni who claimed to be a soldier, has landed him in police net for brutally assaulting a woman police inspector while she was on traffic duty in Lagos.
PEOPLE AND POWER investigation revealed that at about 1730 hours on Monday, Ilemba Hausa Police Station received a distress call that a female Police Officer, Inspector Martina Onyeacho on traffic control at Shibiri bus stop in Ilemba Hausa area of Lagos was being attacked by unknown person. A patrol team was reportedly deployed promptly to the scene to rescue her. Her assailant, 32 years old Ayeni was arrested while the Police woman was quickly rushed to Hospital for treatment as she severely beaten by the assailant.
The inspector who was said to have received the beating of her life from the ferocious attacker sustained various degrees of injuries from punches thrown at her.
According to eye witness’s account, the suspect who presented himself as a soldier, was a passenger in a commercial bus which obstructed traffic flow on the busy road, waiting to pick passengers. He was allegedly angry with the order issued by the traffic Police woman to the driver to move his vehicle away from the main road to pave way for free flow of traffic since the place was not a designated bus stop or park for picking passengers.
Ayeni was said to have claimed that the police woman did not accord him the respect he deserved as a soldier seated in front of the bus and that she was wrong to have challenged the driver in his presence. He followed up with physical assault on her, beating her with sticks, punching and kicking her as if the police woman had offended him elsewhere.
It was gathered from police sources that during questioning, the suspect disclosed that he spent four months in Nigerian Army Depot, Zaria in 2002 but was dismissed from training on mental health grounds. And since then, he has been posing as a soldier.
PEOPLE AND POWER learnt the suspect was once married but that his wife and a daughter left him six months ago.
Confirming the incident, Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana; a Superintendent of Police said investigation was ongoing and that the suspect would soon be charged to Court.
